Literature Text

Narrator: Once upon a time there was a widow who lived by herself in the woods far away from the towns. In front of her house grew two rose bushes. One held delicate white blossoms, while the other was a bold scarlet.

One night, when the sky was clear, she saw the first star in the sky. And on that star, she made a wish. She made a wish for a family.

The next morning, when the sun rose, the widow found two girls nestled beneath each of the bushes. She named each after the flower from which they came. Rose Red was fiery and outgoing, while her sister, Rose White, was calm and quite.

The daughters proved to be great help, especially during the winter days. One evening, when the snow was falling hard, there was a knock on the door.

Mother: Go, Rose White, and see what poor soul is outside the door.

(enters Panda through door)

Rose White: (gasps) a panda!

Panda: Do not be afraid. I will do you no harm. I am half frozen and would like to warm myself for a while by your fire.

Rose Red: Poor bear! Come lay by our fire.

Panda: Young ladies, will you please knock the snow from my heavy coat?

(Rose Red and Rose White knock snow off the Panda)

Panda: Thank you.

Mother: You may sleep here on the hearth so that you will be sheltered from the cold and bad weather.

Panda: Why thank you. I would be glad to.

Narrator: After this, every evening the bear would return and sit by the fire, the same time, just before nightfall. The girls soon became fond of their new friend the panda. The door was left unbolted until the panda was there. But one morning, when spring returned and everything was green again, the panda told Rose White that he must leave them and not come back the whole summer.

Rose White: Where are you going dear bear?

I need to go into the forest and guard my treasures from the gnome folk. In winter, the ground is frozen and the gnomes can’t reach my treasure. But now the warm sun will melt the ice and the gnomes will be able to reach what is mine.

Narrator: And so the panda left into the forest, thus leaving both of the widow’s daughters very sad indeed. But one morning, not long after this, the mother sent the girls into the forest to gather some twigs. On their way to the woods, they came across a pond. They went to the water and saw something that looked like a giant grasshopper hopping about the bank as if it were to jump into the water. But when they got closer, they found it was a gnome.

Rose Red: What are you doing? You will fall into the water!

Gnome: It’s not that simple. Don’t you see the fish will pull me in?

(The Gnome is entangled in fishing line. The girls go to help and have to cut the string)

Gnome: You donkey! Without that fish, I dare not show myself again to my people! I wish you would have got lost along the path!
(Gnome gathers his bag)
(Exeunt Gnome)

Rose White: (waves) You’re welcome!
Narrator: And so they continued to gather twigs for their dear mother. Not long after, they came across a clearing where, once again, they came across the gnome.

(Gnome examines bag contents)

Gnome: Oh, precious jewels! Precious stones!
(Gnome notices girls)

Gnome: (Angrily) What are you staring at? And what are…
(The Gnome is interrupted by a loud growl)

Panda: RAWR!

(Enters Panda and attacks the Gnome)

Gnome: Spare me dear panda lord! I will give you all my jewels! See all the treasure just laying there? Grant me my life! What would you do with such a little fellow? You would barely notice me between those big teeth! But see those two children! Eat them, I beg you! Let me go!

(bear hits the Gnome with a fatal blow. Girls look frightened.)

Panda: Rose Red! Rose White! Do not be afraid. Wait a little bit and I’ll go with you.
(Panda becomes a man)

Panda: I am an emperor. I was enchanted by that wicked gnome. He stole my treasure and made me wander the forest as a bear until his death should set me free. Now he has his punishment.

(Girls hug the Emperor)

Narrator: Rose Red, Rose White and the emperor walked to the cottage together. They told the widow about the gnome, the spell and everything else they could think of. Soon afterwards the widow and her daughters were made guests in the emperor’s house, where they lived a good life. The rose bushes from the cottage where planted in front of the palace and continued to bear, each year, the most beautiful red and white roses.
This is based off of the Brother's Grimm story of Rose Red and Rose White (or Snow White. I've heard it both ways). My group in Drama is supposed to create a short play to be preformed for elementry students. I was the one who wrote the script. It is quite cheesy; which I am not fond of. My group liked it and this is what we are using. I hope it doesn't suck as bad as I think it does. It is themed a bit Asian. I play the widow. Yay for two lines.
